The Celebrity Inspired Engagement Ring Guide: 2011 Edition
With all the movie stars, singers and Hollywood hoi polloi getting engaged this year, it seems like the men of the world are taking Beyonce’s warning seriously: they like it, and they’re gonna put a ring on it! Being that one third of all engagements take place over the holidays, there couldn’t be a better time to take a cue from your favorite celebrities and pop the question. The top five celebrity-inspired engagement ring trends for 2011, inspired by Weddingchannel.com’s round-up, include a fantastic mix of classic and innovative pieces, for all styles and every budget. Check it out!
1. Fit For a Princess. There hasn’t been an engagement ring trend this big since Princess Diana got engaged back in the 80’s—and it’s the same ring! Kate Middleton, soon to be Princess Catherine of England, wears an incredible engagement ring featuring a hefty deep blue sapphire surrounded by smaller diamonds. Demand for sapphires has skyrocketed, and this is one trend that isn’t going anywhere. Keep in mind that a lot of the same factors that are important for diamonds—cut quality, carat size—apply to high-quality gemstones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds.
2. Made to Order. Custom solitaire engagement rings are perfect for people who love everything to be one-of-a-kind, and it’s not as difficult or as expensive as you think! Stephen Moyer, of True Blood fame, created a custom engagement ring for his co-star and off-screen wife, Anna Paquin. Custom rings may take slightly longer to produce, but it will be worth the wait when she sees the perfect ring of her dreams!
4. Think Outside the Circle. Unusual and creative diamond cuts like the pear, oval and marquise, have been around for a long time, but they’ve never been more popular than they are right now. Victoria Beckham is famous for her dramatic marquise solitaire, but even more traditional pop princesses like Katherine Heigl and Katie Holmes are opting for a more creative shape. Heart shapes have lost popularity in the last few years, but die-hard romantics will always aim straight for the heart anyway.
5. Something Old, Something New. Vintage rings are creative and different, great for the bride who is truly an individual. Antique or vintage engagement rings often feature expert craftsmanship and impeccable detailing, along with elaborate designs and romantic details. Keep in mind, however, that the diamonds may be of poorer cut grades and generally lower quality than what is now available to the average consumer. You can visit antique jewelers if you are really set on a vintage setting, and then have it set with modern, high-quality diamonds to ensure optimal light performance, or just opt for a vintage-style engagement ring. Celebrities from Megan Fox to Christina Applegate went the vintage engagement ring route. (Fox then lost her ring on a beach, but that’s a different story!)
